The 5 Best Tactical Pens for 2020

Last Updated:

Combat Pen, Self-Defence Pen, Tactical Pen, Survival Pen – whatever you may call it, it’s common knowledge that you have to make sure that these pens are able to protect you and defend you whenever unforeseen dangers come by. They must be able to pierce the hardest objects, inflict the most injury and pain to whoever attacks you.

A lot of the pens have been tested, and their live demos are basically all over the internet for any one of you to witness. I have been thoroughly impressed with how these pens are able to effectively shatter glass, even coconuts, and how they are still able to write just like a typical pen.

Gone are the days where you should carry for folding knife for protection, now a tactical pen will more than suffice! Below are 5 pens which I believe meet these standards of mine.

Best Tactical Pen – My Top 5

Gerber 31-001880 Impromptu Tactical Pen

The Gerber 31-001880 is one of the toughest tactical pens around. For me, the push-button mechanism allows for more convenience, and helps provide me with all the basics I’m looking for in a Tactical pen.

It’s got an integrated glass-breaker tip made of tempered steel, guaranteeing me, or anyone else that whoever gets stabbed by this pen is sure to get injured. Another feature which I totally love as well is how the Rite in the Rain ink cartridge, which would enable me or anyone who’d be using the pen to write, no matter how rough the conditions are.

The Gerber 31-001880 has also got a stiff, rugged machined steel body, and a pocket clip which keeps the pen handy. The only downside of this pen, however, is that it might not get through, or it may come under fire from tight security, but this doesn’t happen most of the time. The stainless steel tip, moreover, allows people to write smoothly still.

Plenty of those who purchased this product have given it rave reviews alongside me, proof that this tactical pen is a good buy, indeed.

Smith & Wesson SWPENMPBK Military and Police Tactical Pen, Black

This special pen, which measures a pretty decent 6.1 inches, and weight 1.4 ounces fits and feels just right in my hands, and fits comfortably in my pocket. It is made of T6061 aircraft aluminium, guaranteeing you a solid yet lightweight feel. It has a cool, black finish to it which to me, looks easy on the eye.

I also think that the Parker and Hauser ink makes it a guarantee that it would write very well. A lot of you, however, may be confused with the pen’s writing end. Unlike other models, it is housed just below the flat end cap, and not where the pointed end is at as well. This is one downside of this tactical pen by Smith and Wesson, as it may take some time to get used to.

Upon some try outs, the point for piercing does inflict so much pain, despite not being too sharp, making it great to use in conjunction with other self-defence weapons. The cap is held in the right place and has a solid hold around the pen, thus allowing it to be secure.

An overwhelming majority of consumers who availed of the tactical pen by Smith and Wesson were happy with their purchase, hence you can be assured that everything I’m saying about this pen is true.

Schrade SCPENBK Tactical, Pen Black

At just 5.7”, this pen is one of the shortest around. Just like the others, I highly recommend this for its strength, as it is made with CNC machined 6061 aircraft aluminium. It also has a cap which allows you to screw it on/off. The pocket clip, however, might stick up a little high and the pen cap does not hold on tightly once capped off.

I believe that this is also one of the strongest and in contention to be the number 1 tactical pen, given that I have seen a lot of test runs for this pen, which showed that it is pretty much capable of cracking a coconut open. The videos on Amazon give me the confidence to take on any combat with anyone! This is one of the strongest tactical pens around, and I’m definitely not the only one who thinks so.

Boker Plus 09BO093 Titan K.I.D CAL .50 Tactical Pen, Silver

This is one of the few tactical pens around with a sturdy and solid aluminium coloured body, which I personally love. This is designed by Thomas Braunagel and has ink refills made by Fisher Space Pen Cartridge.

This make me feel secure given the limited lifetime warranty as well. Over-all, it is one solid choice for a Tactical Pen as well.  The powder coat surface finish is oh-so-fine to the touch, and is just the right weight for a pen with such features. It has a relatively “industrial” kind of style which is not as shown compared to other pens. Bolt action is rather stiff, and takes some getting used to, and this is due to the metal-on-metal friction and the spring inside.

I also need not worry about the cost as this is one of the best tactical pens for someone on a budget.

Tuff-Writer Precision Press Series Tactical Pen Black

For me, the coolest feature of this Precision Press “Clicky” pen, is that it is entirely modular, and it wouldn’t be a hassle for me should one of the parts require a return or a replacement of some sort. As with other pens, this is also made out of 6061-T6 Aluminum. The tip is also made out of 303 Stainless Steel, with a clip which is pressed out of spring steel and reinforced to make it resistant to corrosion.

This also has black Duron O-Rings which make my grip so much easier, allowing me to use its other components, and the pen side of it with so much ease. Despite being feature-packed, it’s still small enough to fit into standard-sized pockets. It’s one of the most underrated, but still a great choice for someone who likes a well-rounded and consistent product.
